No content platforms built for rural areas
Wyoming office of tourism had a problem – they needed to feed their social media machine with content from across a state 400 miles wide and encompassing almost 100,000 square miles. Sending a film crew, or even a freelance partner, to plan, travel, shoot, and lodge was breaking budgets. Detailed planning was burdensome. More than that, it was missing a local’s touch – the trendy place to eat, the great sunset spot, the early morning wildlife shot. These were things that couldn’t be easily planned from afar.
There are many platforms that connect brands with influencers and content creators, but none with distributed local Creators across the rural mountain west. So, we built one.
With WOT as a trial partner, Snowday built an online marketplace and app experience that connects rural creators with location specific, paid, social-first projects. Snowday recruited users in every county in Wyoming and built a Creator base complete with portfolio examples, equipment lists, and bios that focus on Creator style and local knowledge.
How Fieldlist is different from traditional content creator platforms:
- Creators are locals, representing every county in Wyoming
- Premium compensation for creators since businesses are saving on travel and planning costs
- Simple, comprehensive media release with unlimited use licensing for businesses
- Deliverables include the edited Reel and all included footage, for future reuse in other projects
- Agency oversight of all projects, deliverables, and project management
How does Fieldlist work for Businesses and Creators?
Fieldlist gives businesses and travel organizations an structured space to define their project brief, striking a balance between prescriptive shoots and creator freedom, as a local, to shoot a great story.
Businesses post their project, Creators apply, and the Business awards the gig. Snowday sits in the middle as the project manager and quality control, ensuring deadlines and quality standards are met. Creators get paid a premium upon completion, 2-4X what they can earn on similar platforms, because they’re local. The business saves on travel and production expenses while avoiding the details of managing quality vendor outputs, and the rural Creator can make real money doing something built on their local expertise and passions.
Creators come out on top too. Fieldlist can give Creators with existing travel plans or unique expertise (like rock climbing, skiing, or horseback riding) a way to get paid for something they were already planning. Businesses get activity-rich content shoots at a fraction of the cost of planning a dedicated production.
Creators handle:
- Detailed shoot planning
- Narrative
- Logistics and access
- Media releases
- Location and use permits
- Travel and activity costs or fees
With premium Creator compensation, the business also gets more than just the finished Reel. Many Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs) must keep complicated records of usage licensing agreements and managed content libraries. Fieldlist executes a full-use license on both the finish Reel and the associated clips. This gives the DMO more than just one piece of content, but the building blocks for future content like ads, website bumpers, and re-cut Reels.
Businesses Get:
- Edited Reel with captions
- Edited Reel without captions
- String out of all footage used
- Ability to re-edit, re-cut anything for any use or format
- Simple media management: Complete unrestricted use license, no need to credit
- Simple flat rate pricing – no budget uncertainty
- Agency led quality control and project management
- Ability to leverage individual / freelancer status for commercial or public lands permit compliance
How it’s going
Over the last year, Snowday has received praise for continually adding features in direct response to Businesses and Creators needs. Businesses wanted to see more details about Creator’s style and capabilities. Done. Creators wanted to get paid quicker. Done. Businesses wanted a better way to track project progress that kept Creators on-time. Done.
There are now multiple businesses and organizations on the platform. They’re getting more content, of higher quality, and with less direct management than before. Content has been used in Reels and ads, and Creators have gotten paid for doing things they both enjoy and know deeply about as a local.
What’s coming on Fieldlist
The feature roadmap for Fieldlist looks bright. We’re working on project templates to improve clarity while reducing the time to setup a project for Businesses. Geo-located projects will allow Creators to explore open projects on a map rather than list view, with the ability to filter by distance or planned travel route (for roadtrip content).
